The Irish Match

In 1959 BTA (Bertie) Lane inaugerated a match against the Corporation of Insurance Brokers Ireland (CIBI). Played over 3 days with 12 a side, the first match resulted in an Irish victory at the Baltray and Portmarnock courses.

After trailing for several years in terms of matches won, 2012 saw CIB finally draw level by winning the match at Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St George’s. This meant that CIB had won 8 of the last 10 matches from 2002. The match position now stands at 23 wins each with seven matches halved and one abandoned.

The highly competitive match alternated between Ireland and England on courses such as Walton Heath , Wentworth, Lahinch and Ballybunion. Our Irish friends hold a lead over the 40 years competition, leading by 20 matches to 12 with 6 halved and 1 abandoned.

The match required the home Captain to display his poetic and classical wit in the embellishment of the printed programme for the concluding dinner. Generous hospitality featured strongly and there is a notably different style in the sides chosen texts:

English- “Happy we are met, happy have we been, happy may we part and happy meet again”.

Irish – ” To our sweethearts and wives, may they never meet”

The Irish match has not been contested since 2012 and has been replaced in the calendar by the Captains Tour.

Other Matches

The first match against opposition other than the CIBI was in 1970 against the CIB (Southern Area) at Liphook. In recent years the programme has settled into a regular rota of matches against the Company Market, Lloyd’s, the Worshipful Company of Insurers Golf Society and with the welcome addition of a fixture against the Cavaliers. The fixture list below demonstrates the high quality of the golf courses played by the society and represents a chance for members to experience courses that might otherwise be inaccessible to them.

The Marshall Jigger

The Committee agreed that an annual individual knockout competition should be held between participating members of the Society. The intention is to provide a competition with a different format, which offers members an additional opportunity to meet with other members, and to enjoy playing at the various clubs to which the members of the Society belong.
